Teaching Opportunities in NZ for Overseas-Trained Teachers: (Start Teaching in New Zealand)

Updated: Aug 28, 2023

Are you an overseas-based teacher seeking employment opportunities in New Zealand? Do you have skills and experience as a professional educator in your country? If you are looking to grow your career as a teacher and explore opportunities outside your hometown, New Zealand is the perfect destination to live your dreams and build your career.

Currently, New Zealand is facing a teacher shortage, with school principals and administrators reporting that existing teachers, lecturers, and educators are having a difficult time accommodating the increasing number of early education, primary, and secondary school students in the country. To address the need for additional teachers, the New Zealand Government has introduced the Overseas Relocation Grant (ORG), aiming to attract foreign teachers to move to NZ by helping them cover the relocation costs.

What is the Overseas Relocation Grant?

The Overseas Relocation Grant is a way for the NZ Government to speed up its teacher recruitment drive, encouraging foreign teachers to live and work in New Zealand. With this government grant, qualified overseas-trained teachers will be given a lump sum of NZD$10,000.00 when they become registered teachers in New Zealand.

Who is Eligible?

To be eligible for ORG, applicants must meet the criteria set out by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (TCANZ), such as having the right qualifications for teaching, a current practicing certificate, as well as a final job offer from an accredited educational institution in New Zealand.

Furthermore, the applicant must be able to prove that they have completed the registration process set out by TCANZ and have been accepted to teach in an early childhood learning centre or a primary or secondary school in New Zealand with a 12-month contract.

Once these general requirements are met and the registration process has been completed, the grant will then be paid out to the relocating overseas-trained teacher within ten working days.

The terms and conditons of the grant are under the control of the regulatory bodies concerned and can change without notice.

Making the Move Easy

The ORG is a great incentive for teachers and educators from different parts of the world looking to move to New Zealand. With up to $10,000.00 given to successful applicants, the grant serves as financial support towards relocation costs associated with the move.
